This 1964 Merlyn Mk6A was purchased by its current owner in 2016 and subsequently driven in the 2018 Monterey Historics. Featuring fiberglass bodywork finished in black and yellow, chassis 78RS is powered by a 1.6-liter Lotus-Ford DOHC inline-four that was overhauled by Ivey Engines in Portland, Oregon, in 2017. Additional features include twin Weber 45 DCOE carburetors, electronic ignition, a Hewland five-speed manual transaxle, four-wheel disc brakes, four-wheel independent suspension with adjustable coilover shock absorbers, yellow-painted 13” Panasport wheels, a Fuel Safe fuel cell, and a single racing seat upholstered in black. Featured on BaT in August 2015, this Merlyn Mk6A is now offered at no reserve on dealer consignment in Monterey, California, with invoices from the 2017 engine build, an HMSA logbook, and a bill of sale.

Colchester Racing Developments was founded in Essex in 1960 and soon after began producing formula race cars under the Merlyn name. In 1962 the company forayed into sports car production with the Mark 4, which evolved into the Mark 6 and 6A variants during the mid-1960s. Construction incorporated a tubular space frame wrapped in fiberglass bodywork, which in this example is finished in black with a yellow dorsal stripe accented by green borders. Imperfections in the finish are shown up close in the photo gallery below. Features include faired-in headlights, a wraparound plexiglass windshield, dual bullet-style side mirrors, and a roll bar.

Panasport wheels feature yellow-painted centers and bright rims and are wrapped in Avon tires measuring 5.0/22.0-13 up front and 5.5/23.0-13 at the rear. Stopping is handled by four-wheel disc brakes with cross-drilled rotors and dual master cylinders linked by a balance bar.

The right-hand drive cockpit houses a single seat trimmed in black upholstery and equipped with a RaceQuip five-point harness. Additional features include a right-hand shifter, a cowl-mounted rearview mirror above the windshield, a fire suppression system, and a hand-operated fire extinguisher. The harness and fire suppression system will need to be updated prior to competition use.

The three-spoke Intertech steering wheel features a Merlyn hub and sits ahead of a RaceTech 10k-rpm tachometer flanked by gauges monitoring coolant temperature, oil temperature, and oil pressure. The car is not equipped with an odometer, and mileage is not known. According to the selling dealer, the car was only driven during the 2018 Monterey Historics under current ownership.

Ivey Engines overhauled the 1.6-liter Lotus-Ford DOHC inline-four in 2017. Work included resurfacing the crossflow cylinder head, boring and honing the block, and polishing and balancing the crankshaft. The connecting rods, bearings, piston rings, timing chain, and timing cover assembly were replaced during the project. Induction is through twin Weber 45 DCOE carburetors, while a PerTronix distributor was installed at the time of the overhaul. The Fuel Safe fuel cell will need to be serviced prior to competition use.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Hewland Mk9 five-speed manual transaxle, and a replacement Tilton clutch disc was installed during the 2017 service by Ivey Engines. Suspension incorporates a double-wishbone front setup and reverse lower wishbones and single upper links at the rear. Adjustable coilover shock absorbers and anti-roll bars are utilized at both ends.
