Vehicle Overview
New to the Monterey showroom is this lovely 1966 Porsche
912 Coupe in Irish Green over Black.
This is a familiar car to Mohr Imports. Not only has it had been locally owned since the early 2000’s, it was also consigned and sold by us in 2010 to its current owner.
This 912 is a matching numbers example; engine and transmission.
Soon after the six cylinder 911, Porsche introduced the 912 using the well proven 1600 cc four-cylinder push rod engine from the sought after 356 SC model. Production began in 1965 and the 912 quickly outsold the 911. Though less powered the 912 is lighter than the 911 and with a more even weight distribution (45% front and 55% rear). It has remained an underrated favorite to many Porsche enthusiasts, both entry level and from more serious collectors.
Per the Kardex the car was sold new to Redding California in 1966. Outside of that not much is known by us before 2003 when the car was restored by marque specialist Classic Showcase, who reside in Costa Mesa, California. It was said to have a color change from Light Ivory to the Irish Green (Color Code 6606), replaced the interior, seals and glass.
After the restoration was complete, the car was at auction in Monterey during Classic Car Week. Consigned with RM Auctions, lot number 150 brought above market correct money for the time, showing the level of restoration quality.
The car was purchased from RM by a local doctor who enjoyed the car for most of a decade before consigning the car with us in 2010. A great Porsche enthusiast purchased the car and in turn, drove it spiritedly, up until the day he dropped it off with us again. Notable events the car was shown and participated in were the Porsche Parade in 2014 (which took place in Monterey), the Porsche Werks Reunion in both 2014 & 2015 as well as the Monterey Castrol Motor Oil Grand Prix. Owner stated the car was awarded in 2014 at the Porsche Werks Reunion during Monterey Car Week.
Fitted with the desirable and practical matching 5-Speed transmission, type 902/1. The chrome and brightwork throughout is very nice, settling in after the restoration many years ago. The rubber window seals that were replaced are still in excellent condition. Operable side front and rear wing/vent glass work as they should and the dash with brushed aluminum face plate is in good condition with all instruments working.
Not much has changed since 2010, still a quality Porsche with ‘driver +’ characteristics and evidence of great care.
Also note that this car is searchable on the Porsche 912 Registry.
