Our 5th Annual Monterey Car Week Collection Sale with Bring Trailer Auctions
Presented by Mohr Imports Monterey, member of Bring a Trailer's Local Partners Program.
This 1959 Porsche 356A 1600S coupe was originally delivered via Sonauto of Paris, France on March 12, 1959 and was handled by Volkswagen Espanola of Madrid, Spain later that year before being sold to its first owner in New York. It reportedly remained in California from the late 1960s through the early 1980s, after which it was relocated to Illinois and Michigan, where it was acquired by the current owner in 2021. Subsequent work involved overhauls of the 1.6-liter flat-four, dual Zenith carburetors, and four-speed manual transaxle along with replacing the shocks at each corner. Finished in blue over brown leatherette upholstery, the car is equipped with fiberglass Euro-style bumpers, 15? chrome-finished wheels, and a wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel. This 356A is now offered on dealer consignment in Monterey, California, as part of Mohr Imports’ Monterey Car Week Collection with a driver’s manual, partial service records, removed parts, a copy of the Kardex, and a clean Michigan title.
The Reutter-built bodywork left the factory in Meissen Blue (703) and was previously repainted ivory. Damage was repaired at the rear of the car following a collision in 1999, and the car was subsequently repainted blue following rust repairs in the front fenders. Fiberglass Euro-style bumpers were installed at that time, and the removed US-spec bumpers and overriders accompany the vehicle. Further exterior details include a left bullet-style mirror, Hella headlight assemblies, gold-finished badging, and a single exhaust outlet. There are cracks in the rear bumper and on the right quarter panel aft of the door. A collection of body stampings can be seen in the gallery.
Chrome-finished 15? ventilated steel wheels are wrapped in 185/65 Ultra Metric HR Steel Belted tires, while a full-size spare is stored in the trunk compartment. The shocks and rubber bushings were replaced in 2021. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel hydraulic drums.
The cabin houses bucket seats that have been re-trimmed in brown leatherette complemented by a matching dashpad, door panels, and rear jump seat. Oatmeal squareweave carpets cover the floors, and patterned mats and black rubber floor linings have been fitted up front. A wooden shift knob is installed, and the Solid State push-button radio housed in the dash is inoperative. There are holes on the driver’s seat back.
The wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel frames VDO green-letter instrumentation including a central 6k-rpm tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, and a combination gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 26k miles, approximately 2k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown. The removed stock steering wheel is included in the sale.
The Type 616/2 1.6-liter flat-four was rebuilt in November 2021, while the dual Zenith carburetors were overhauled in March 2022.
Engine stamping 83528 can be seen above, and a corresponding number is listed on the Kardex below. Gearbox stamping 26627 is pictured in the gallery and is also listed on the Kardex.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle that was overhauled in November 2021. The underside was re-coated at that time, and the seller notes corrosion along a number of underside components. A replacement exhaust system has been installed.
The Kardex shows delivery via Sonauto of Paris, France, as well as the factory color, options, and powertrain numbers.
